- A health issue exists that is related to one of the above impairments, making it medically equal to the criteria established by the Social Security Administration
- Although the impairment isn’t listed above, it is similar or equal in severity to one of these conditions
- When combined, the effects of an individual’s impairments make them medically equal to at least one of the impairments listed above.
Other requirements
As noted above, the existence of a qualifying impairment alone isn’t enough to qualify an individual for Social Security disability benefits. Rather, an individual who suffers from a qualifying condition must also meet certain technical requirements. In order for an individual with a qualifying condition to be granted Social Security disability benefits, he or she must demonstrate the following:
- He or she is a United States citizen or qualifying alien
- He or she has the required number of work credits. (This requirement varies depending on a variety of factors.)
- He or she meets certain income and asset requirements
